*UPDATE 2* Lab Zero just passed their $725,000 goal!

“And we’ve raised more than $725,000!

Mane6 will be getting the Skullgirls engine for Fighting is Magic, everyone will be getting Robo-Fortune!

At this point, my perception of reality lays shattered on the floor – this is just completely ridiculous. In a good way, of course.

Next up? $750,000 for Robo-Fortune stage and story mode!

Can nobody stop this funding machine!?” – Source

*UPDATE* The indiegogo fund has passed the $700,000 mark and unlocked a new bonus, the Real Soviet Announcer pack by MikeZ. It’s currently at $705k, so just another $20k to reach the next goal!

Lab Zero Games has already raised about $675,000 to fund not one, not two, but three new characters for free DLC on all platforms along with voice pack extras and bonus stages.

If the Skullgirls crowdsourcing venture raises $725,000 they will license their fighting game engine to Mane6 for free! Some of you might not know who Mane6 is and some of you might, but Mane6 is a group that started developing a fighting game called My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. The game was actually very well made and had great potential until they received a Cease and Desist Letter from Hasbro over the use of the My Little Pony franchise and had to stop development of the game. As luck would have it though, the game’s development was revitalized thanks to a part of the My Little Pony team. Lauren Faust, producer of the animated My Little Pony series, joined the Mane6 team to help develop new characters and a new setting specifically for the game that would not infringe upon the MLP franchise. With the amazing help of the MLP producer, they are currently working on Fighting is Magic.

squiggly_2__d_by_kuraikido52-d4u2vqlThat is a plus that would greatly help this fledgeling company, so show some support! Back to Skullgirls though, I wanted to talk about what has already been earned. The first item that was been completely paid for was actually funded in the first 24 hours of funding. That is the new playable character Squigly that was mentioned in an early post right here. Squigly was the entire reason for starting the crowdsourcing venture and blossomed into a much larger thing that will overall help the development of the fighting game community. In any case, Squigly will be an interesting addition to the cast of Skullgirls and provide some never before seen features in any fighting game. Thanks to the reach of her parasite, Leviathan, she has long reaching attacks and pokes. She also has different stances that will change her move set. The most interesting thing about her play style is how she manipulates the game camera.

“As an opera star, when Squigly sings all eyes focus on her, forcibly shifting the game’s camera towards her. This naturally moves the edge of playfield with it, dragging her opponent towards her. No other game has a move like this, and it should open a number of interesting tactical possibilities, especially when used as an Ensemble Attack.”

She’ll be a great addition to the cast!

DLC_BigBandThe next item to be completely funded is the very first male character to join the cast of Skullgirls, Big Band. Here is what we know so far about Big Band from the indiegogo page:

“Ben Birdland has seen a lot in his time, including the worst of the Grand War. But nothing was worse than what he saw as a beat cop in New Meridian. When he ran afoul of his crooked unit he was given a violent early retirement, and his broken body was left to spend the rest of its days in an iron lung.

That would have been the end of Ben’s story if it hadn’t drawn the ears of the Anti-Skullgirl Labs. With little left to lose, he agreed to be rebuilt with their experimental procedures. Melded with the machinery that allows him to breathe and a powerful an array of pneumatic weaponry, he was reborn as “Big Band.”

Now a senior member of Lab 8, he’s become a father figure of sort to the younger ASG soldiers. A firm believer in their cause, he has stayed with the project through its controversies and still sees his place on the front lines against the Skullgirl. His technology may be dated, but he more than makes up for it with experience and fortissimo.”

We’ve got some high hopes for the first male character in Skullgirls!

Now for the third thing that has been completely funded…….a third character! But unlike the other two so far, this one will be decided by the supporters of the indiegogo funding. Everyone that donates even $1 will be able to participate. Over the course of the funding, Lab Zero released 32 potential characters that we will have a chance to vote on. Here is how voting will be handled:

Voting will go as follows:

  • Four rounds of voting
  • 1st round: All characters, 3 votes
  • 2nd round: Top 16 from 1st round, 3 votes
  • 3rd round: Top 8 from 2nd round, 3 votes
  • 4th round: Top 3 from 3rd round, 1 vote

Polls will be e-mailed directly to all contributors.

All characters and their bios/play styles are available on Lab Zero’s website here http://www.labzerogames.com/3rdcharacter/.

So contribute to help Mane6 license the fighting game engine or donate to have a say on which character will be the third character for Skullgirls!
