The Oculus team announce today via their blog that they have agreed to acquire the Seattle based Carbon Design team. You may or may not have heard of Carbon Design before, but they are the team behind one of the most well engineered and successful gamepads of all time, the Xbox 360 controller. They have also had a hand in designing many more products over their 20 year history, including the original Kinect.
We’re incredibly excited to be part of the team and we’re looking forward to helping design the future.”
– Peter Bristol, Creative Director at Carbon Design
The acquisition isn’t finalized as of yet, but is expected to close by the end of the summer. Oculus plans to have Carbon Design continue to operate out of their studio in the Seattle area in order for them to work closely with Oculus R&D which is located in Redmond.
This is the first big purchase Oculus has made since being purchased by Facebook for an astounding $2 billion and it looks like Oculus is making some wise decisions. Carbon Design will bring their years of product engineering, design, and success to the premiere virtual reality device. Newer units of the Oculus VR will reap the benefits of this acquisition and we can expect to see some completely redesigned headgear in the future.
