Bungie is building one of the largest first-person shooters in the history of gaming, so why not host a giant Alpha test to start the bar at sky high levels?

Released in the latest “Bungie Weekly Update,” Bungie let us have a look at the details of how our Alpha test period worked out behind the scenes. Slating the mid-June Alpha has a new fire within the company to get things polished and finished in time for the July Beta test, and September 9th release, Destiny as presented on the Alpha weekend was “ancient by our standards, riddled with content and bugs [they would] never allow through to ship.”

Given the ridiculous level of polish we noticed during our preview, this is nothing but good news for the consumers who haven’t yet touched Destiny. Bungie is setting our bar ever higher, but wanted to take the Alpha test phase to see if we can crack through to find more errors than even they had seen – putting millions of play tests into the wild would be a great way to do this.

In many cases, the really rough and jagged edges had been hammered smooth long ago, making it all the more difficult to see them discovered, but in just as many others, there’s still work to do, and the only way to get it done is to let you touch down in our world to tear the place wide open.

During the first few days of Destiny’s public operation, over 6 million matches, and nearly 175 million kills were racked up in PVP and PVE combat. Bungie broke down the details on the official news release.
