Hello and welcome to the third guide on the Heroes of the Storm Beta. Previously we covered Zeratul, Dark Templar and Sgt. Hammer, Seige Tank guides. my name is Lordunderpants and today I will be covering Valla the Demon Hunter.


-Combat Trait-

  Hatred: Basic Attacks grant bonus Attack Damage and Movement Speed temporarily.

For every basic attack you land on any enemy minion, hero, or npc minion, you gain a stack of Hatred. Hatred stacks up to 10 times and slowly goes away when you stop attack, keep attack and the buff will keep refreshing itself.

-Core Abilities-


Hungering Arrow (Q): Fire an arrow which seeks out and strikes multiple targets.

A skill shot arrow that goes in a straight line but curves to hit an enemy, has a chance to hit the enemy twice or another enemy hero.



Multishot (W): Damage enemies in an area.

Fires out a wave of arrows in a cone aoe, great for clearing waves and team fights.

Vault (E): Dash to a location.

A great escape or chase tool, you can vault in any direction you choose which can help get away from enemies, get out of aoe attacks/stuns, or catch up to someone who’s trying to get away.

-Heroic Abilities-

Rain of Vengeance (R): Bombards an area for heavy damage and stuns for a short duration.

Shoots out 2 waves of arrows in a medium range line in front of you, dealing quite a bit of damage and causing 2 short stuns.


Strafe (R): Unleashes a flurry of arrows at nearby enemies, dealing rapid damage.

Rapidly shoots a bunch of arrows in a aoe around you, you can still walk and use vault, any kind of stun will immediately stop this skill.


As always there are no bad talents, customize them to how you enjoy playing your characters, I’ll go over the talents and explain why I choose certain ones in certain situations.

Level 1 Talents



Cost-Effective Materials (Q): Reduces the Mana cost of Hungering Arrow by 30.


Siphoning Arrow (Q): 50% of the damage dealt by Hungering Arrow is returned as Health to Valla.


Composite Arrows (W): Increases the range of Multishot by 20%.

Rancor (Trait): Each Hatred stack increases Attack Speed by 1.5%,

Punishment (Trait): Using an Ability also grants 3 Hatred stacks.

For my first talent I generally choose Rancor, when I play Valla I play aggressive which means never stop attacking so the extra attack speed helps out tremendously. If you play more passive or find it hard to constantly attack, Cost-Effective Materials can help you poke more with your Hungering Arrow or Punishment can help you start the fight with more stacks of Hatred. Siphoning Arrow doesn’t provide a huge boost of health back and Multishot already has a pretty decent range, so there really isn’t a huge need for Composite Arrows.

Level 4 Talents


Vampiric Assault: Basic Attacks heal for 15% of the damage dealt to the primary target.


Manticore: Every 3rd Basic Attack against the same target deals 50% additional damage.


Puncturing Arrow (Q): Hungering Arrow range increased by 25% and the number of times it can bounce to 3.


Arsenal (W): Multishot also fires 3 grenades, which deal 35 damage.

This is a nice tier, you really can’t go wrong here, just have to choose which one fits you the best. Generally I get Vampiric Assault only because I tend to be a bit aggressive and can over extend. Manticore is awesome if you are able to attack a lot and not be focus’d down, Puncturing arrow massively increases your reason to keep using Hungering Arrow as much as you can and Arsenal just makes your Multishot do that much more damage.

Level 7 Talents


  Battle Momentum: Basic Attacks reduce Ability cooldowns by 0.5 seconds.

  Caltrops (E): Drop 3 Caltrops while Vaulting. Caltrops do 25 damage and slow enemies by 20% for 2 seconds.

  Repeating Arrow (E): The cooldown for Hungering Arrow is reset when Vault is used.


Searing Attacks: Activate to increase Basic Attack damage by 50% at the cost of mana.

This tier can be a bit varied, I generally choose Caltrops here because if you’re in a fight, especially a 1 on 1 duel, and you need to back away and create some distance, chances are they will run right through each caltrop, taking the damage and taking that much longer to get to you. The other 3 talents are all about if you’re good with your mana, Battle Momentum makes it so if you auto attack more, you can shoot more skill shots, but it doesn’t help if you constantly run out of mana. Same with Searing Attacks, the damage is really nice but generally leaves you low on mana. Repeating Arrow isn’t too bad, I generally like Caltrops more mostly for its slowing effect versus the damage aspect.

Level 10 Talents

This is where you choose your Heroic Ability Strafe or Rain of Vengeance.

Level 13 Talents



Giant Killer: Basic Attacks against enemy Heroes deal bonus damage equal to 1.5% of the Hero’s max Health.


Frost Shot (W): Multishot also slows by 40% for 2 seconds.

Hot Pursuit (Trait): When at 10 stacks of Hatred, the Movement Speed bonus increases to 20% total.

Tempered by Discipline (Trait): Gain up to 10 stacks of Discipline after Hatred stacks are maxed. Basic Attacks heal for 3% of damage dealt.

Spell Shield: Upon taking Ability Damage, reduce that damage and further Ability Damage by 50% for 2 seconds.

Generally around this time of the game, enemy heroes can start becoming a bit beefier, so I usually default with Giant Killer to help negate the higher health bars. It’s not always the best option though, especially if the enemy team is mostly the squishier heroes. Frost Shot can be a life saver with the massive slow it can do, and Tempered by Discipline gaining extra stacks after Hatred is done to heal you can be nice if you didn’t choose Vampiric Assault previously. Spell Shield can be nice against enemy heroes that use a lot of abilities constantly. Hot Pursuits movement can be nice to keep up with the enemy, but generally you want to be more aggressive when you do that, and when you play aggressive you already learn to move in between attacks and generally don’t require the boost in speed.

Level 16 Talents


Executioner: Basic Attacks deal 40% more damage against slowed, rooted, or stunned.

Tumble (E): Vault gains an additional charge, allowing it to be cast twice in succession.


Blood for Blood: Activate to steal 15% of target enemies max health and slow its Movement Speed by 30% for 3 seconds.


Stoneskin: Activate to gain 30% of your Max Health as a shield for 5 seconds.

If you can wrap your head around using another skill, Blood for Blood and Stoneskin can be a huge boost for you in combat. If your team has a lot of stuns, snares, or roots, Executioner will help you deal massive amounts of damage in those late team fights. If you still are having issues with getting away or catching up Tumble may be the option you need to give you that speed boost.

Level 20 Talents


Vengeance (R): Strafe also fires penetrating bolts in a line for 11 damage every 0.25 seconds.

Storm of Vengeance (R): Increases the number of Shadow Beast waves to 4.

Fury of the Storm: Basic Attacks chain to enemies.


Bolt of the Storm: Activate to teleport a short distance.

Vengeance is a pretty nice boost to your Strafe, normally Strafe only hits the first wave of enemies around you, Vengeance helps you out by making sure the enemies hiding in the back take damage as well. Storm of Vengeance doubles how many times Rain of Vengeance hits. If you’d rather not rely on your Heroic Ability, Fury of the Storm is a huge boost to your auto attack damage in groups and Bolt of Storm is a nice addition to your vault for getting to where you need to be.

My Preferred Talent List:

  1. Rancor – The attack speed just works too well when you play aggressively, I don’t like relying on my skills and tend to focus more on auto attacks and placement.
  2. Vampiric Assault – Since I just mentioned I don’t like relying on skills, Manticore seems like my obvious choice for dealing a bit more damage, however I generally get Vampiric Assault because of how aggressive I play, I try to stay in as long as possible. The life steal helps me achieve this, even if i’m not technically doing more damage, being able to stay in longer makes me do more damage.
  3. Caltrops – Usually you’ll want to save vault for escaping and staying alive, the caltrops you drop, when hit, can also slow the enemy increasing your chance for survival. The damage they do is just a bonus.
  4. Strafe – It’s all about that damage, Rain of Vengeance is awesome for the stuns if you’re good at landing it, I’m not good at landing Rain of Vengeance, but i’m good at walking around while my character does massive damage!
  5. Giant Killer – It’s just a steroid for my auto attacks that helps bring down those big beefy tanks that up until now you’re probably having an issue with.
  6. Blood for Blood – The lifesteal damage and slow are really nice in any situation, the only exception is if your team has lots of stuns, snares, and roots, Executioner can be a huge boost to your damage if you primarily team fight, which you hopefully should be.
  7. Fury of the Storm – Hugely boosts your auto attacks when team fighting and clearing waves, Vengeance can be a big boost for Strafe, but generally in the big fights they save the stuns for when you use it and it ends up being a waste.


Valla is a ranged assassin that can do massive amounts of damage zipping through the battle field. Always try to be attacking something, keep your Hatred stacks up so you constantly have your bonus’s. Try and poke with your Hungering Strike and use your Multishot sparingly when you need to clear waves or the enemy is bunched up. Generally try and save Vault for escaping unless you’re certain you can target someone down and get away. Always try and stay behind your tanks while keeping pressure on the enemy, don’t over extend unless you have your escapes up.


Valla is a huge burst damage dealer who can be locked down and killed fairly easy. Manage your placement and try to always attack and you’ll be at the top of the damage meters helping your team to victory.
