Announced at EVO 2014 by NetherRealm Studios, Raiden is coming to the next Mortal Kombat. Though this may be no surprise for anyone who has played any Kombat in the past, Raiden is all-new for the next bump with three distinct fighting styles.

Raiden in Mortal Kombat X is expected to continue on his run as mentor of the “good” alignment of characters through the titles original and non-linear plot. Raiden, the God of Thunder, plays off of some classic moves in the announcement trailer displayed during EVO today, and he will mix up the game with three variations of fighting – Thunder God, Displacer and Storm Lord.

The Thunder God Raiden fighting style will set Raiden in a focus of electrocution combos, allowing players to focus on aggression, and play up a few classic combos. Raiden will work with his classic “Electricity” and “Torpedo” attacks as a nice meat to your ranged and gap-closing abilities. In Displacer mode, players will have the ability to turn a fight and gain mobility at what appears to be the expense of power. Core abilities in Displacer include the classic “Teleport” ability and “Shocking Touch” skill. While using his third skill set, Storm Lord, players will enjoy great zoning abilities, showcased in a new fencing ability where Raiden places electric balls, and on command charges them to connect and keep your opponent at range. This mode appears to have the disadvantage of a slower kit, but if you’re looking to hold a lead, this may be the best way to do so.

While in combat with Kotal Khan, an Aztec Blood God and follower of the Sun, Raiden took a few good jabs to the body in the EVO showcase video [shown below]. Little has been revealed about Kotal Khan to this point, but given that the character was put head-to-head against Raiden in this video, we can expect to hear more about him in the immediate future. Mortal Kombat X is set to release in 2015.
